KKN Gurugram Desk | Pakistan continues to experience seismic instability as multiple earthquake tremors have been reported across various regions, especially Karachi, over the past two weeks. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and National Seismic Monitoring Center, the country was struck by two noticeable tremors on Saturday, with the strongest quake registering a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale.

These frequent tremors have reignited public anxiety, particularly in urban centers like Karachi, as seismic activity along a historical fault line increases.

Pakistan Earthquake Timeline – June 14, 2025

On Saturday, June 14, two earthquakes were recorded in Pakistan:

  • The first tremor occurred in the early morning hours, felt mildly across parts of Karachi.

  • The second tremor, which was more prominent, struck at 6:53 PM (local time) and had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale.

The National Seismic Monitoring Center confirmed that the epicenter was located at a depth of 38 kilometers below the earth’s surface, and tremors were felt in at least five areas of Karachi.

According to Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider, the recurrent low-magnitude earthquakes are linked to seismic energy release from an active fault line running beneath the city’s eastern belt, especially the Landi area.

“If the energy is released slowly in fragments, it reduces the risk. But if it accumulates and releases suddenly, it can lead to a major earthquake,” Haider said.

Karachi’s Active Seismic Fault Line: A Recurring Threat

The Landi fault line has a history of periodic seismic activity, with notable episodes recorded in 2009 and 2021. The current tremors, though mostly low-intensity (2.1 to 3.6), have triggered concern among residents and authorities alike.

Key Observations:

  • Over 21 tremors have been recorded since June 1, 2025.

  • The intensity range has remained between 2.1 and 4.4 magnitude.

  • Tremors have impacted areas like Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Landi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Korangi.

Haider reassured the public, saying,

“The energy is being released gradually, which is a positive sign. If this continues, the risk of a major quake is minimized.”

What Causes Frequent Earthquakes in Karachi?

Karachi lies close to the Makran Subduction Zone, a seismically active region where the Indian and Arabian tectonic plates meet. Additionally, urban expansion, unplanned infrastructure, and population density make the city particularly vulnerable to seismic hazards.

According to geologists:

  • The Landi fault line is capable of generating moderate to strong quakes.

  • In the past, earthquakes in this zone have ranged from 3.0 to 5.5 magnitude.

  • The 2009 earthquake swarm lasted for months, although no major damage was reported.

With urban sprawl continuing, the impact of even a moderate earthquake could be significantly damaging.

Residents Evacuate Amid Panic in Multiple Karachi Localities

The June 14 evening tremor led to panic in several neighborhoods, with people rushing out of their homes, offices, and shopping complexes.

Eye-witness reports suggest:

  • Residents in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Clifton, and PECHS areas evacuated buildings temporarily.

  • No injuries or damage were reported, but the sense of alarm was visible.

  • Social media was flooded with videos showing people gathering in open spaces.

One Karachi resident posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“We felt the whole building shake. It’s scary to think these tremors are becoming so frequent.”

 Precautionary Measures Issued by Authorities

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has advised residents to:

  • Avoid panic during tremors

  • Evacuate high-rise buildings calmly

  • Stay away from glass windows and unsecured structures

  • Keep emergency kits and torchlights ready

  • Ensure communication devices are fully charged

Local government bodies, including Karachi’s District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), have begun awareness campaigns in high-risk zones.

Should Karachi Be Worried About a Big Earthquake?

While current seismic patterns suggest gradual release of energy, experts do not rule out the possibility of a moderate to high-magnitude earthquake in the future if the fault line becomes unstable again.

“Frequent low-magnitude tremors usually help relieve pressure on fault lines. However, if these tremors suddenly stop, it might signal that stress is building up,” warned a senior seismologist at Pakistan Geological Survey.

Pakistan’s largest city, home to over 20 million people, needs urban planning reforms, earthquake-resistant infrastructure, and public preparedness to deal with any future threat.

These keywords align with trending user search patterns and ensure the article is well-positioned on platforms like Google News and Bing.

As Karachi continues to experience a series of earthquake tremors, the city’s vulnerability to seismic disasters is again under the spotlight. While authorities assure that the current tremors are not life-threatening, the increasing frequency is a clear reminder of the region’s seismic sensitivity.

The government and local agencies must now focus on risk mitigation, early warning systems, and community preparedness to ensure the safety of millions living in high-risk zones.
